2011 Grammy nomination leaders

The Grammys are presented in February by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for achievements in the music industry. The name is an abbreviation of the awards’ original titlethe Gramophone Awards. At 2011′s 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, several artists lead the pack in number of nominations, but only one can boast a full ten nominations. American rapper Eminem, who released the Billboard 1 album Recovery on June 18, 2010, was nominated for the following categories:

  • Album of the Year
  • Best Rap Album
  • Record of the Year (“Love the Way You Lie” feat. Rihanna)
  • Song of the Year (“Love the Way You Lie” feat. Rihanna)
  • Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (with Rihanna)
  • Best Short Form Music Video (“Love the Way You Lie” feat. Rihanna)
  • Best Rap Solo Performance (“Not Afraid)
  • Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals (“Airplanes, Part II” with B.o.B & Hayley Williams)
  • Twice for Best Rap Song (“Love the Way You Lie” feat. Rihanna and “Not Afraid”)

The next most nominated artist was Bruno Mars, who released his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans on October 4, 2010. Bruno Mars is the stage name of Peter Gene Hernandez, who in addition to his own album also wrote 2010 hits for artists like B.o.B. and Travis McCoy. His nominations include:

  • Song of the Year (with Cee Lo Green and Philip Lawrence)
  • Best Male Pop Vocal Performance (“Just the Way You Are”)
  • Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (with B.o.B)
  • Best Rap Song (“Nothin’ on You” with Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, and Bobby Simmons, Jr.)
  • Producer of the Year, Non-Classical (with the Smeezingtons)
  • Two nominations for Record of the Year (“Nothin’ on You” with B.o.B. and “Fk You!” with Cee Lo Green)

Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum, and Lady Gaga were tied for third place, with each earning six nominations. Jay-Z released his eleventh studio album, The Blueprint 3, on September 8, 2009 (the eligibility period is September 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010). It was the rapper’s eleventh number one album and produced 5 chart-topping hits. Lady Antebellum is a country pop music groupthey released their second album, Need You Now, on January 26, 2010. The album debuted at 1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA. Finally, Lady Gaga released her third EP, The Fame Monster, on November 18, 2009. Three singles reached the top ten”Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro.” “Telephone” was accompanied by a music video directed by Jonas kerlund, which was inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s films Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, as well as Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise. The video also achieved massive critical success.
